They can only kick you so many times
before they’re empty.

This should be a mantra
for the entire world,
for every boy and every girl
who dared to keep their eyes open
while surrounded by darkness.

The strong have long known the secret,
and keep it close to bruised hearts—
buried deep under the rubble of existence—
that those who strike are weak—
of body, mind, and spirit—
and empty themselves, almost instinctively,
into the clotted flesh of Atlas’s children
and the tempered bones
of a new generation of gladiators.

They can only kick you so many times
before their stained-red boots give life
to your once pale cheeks,
and their hatred is stained with regret.

Bide your time. Stand your ground.
